Piling lies on top of lies while followers hope to get something in the end...

"You tell them a lie, and then when you don't need it anymore, you tell them another lie and tell them they are progressing along the road to wisdom. Then instead of laughing, they follow you even more, hoping that at the heart of all the lies they'll find the truth. And bit by bit they accept the unacceptable. Amazing." - Terry Pratchett in Guards! Guards!

Speaking of politics in literature...

There's this set of children's fantasy literature from the UK, called the Bartimaeus trilogy, which follows the protagonist from pre-teen to teenage years as he becomes a member of parliament and climbs up the power ladder. It also touches on the resistance that's struggling to topple the government, which is composed of magicians (and there's this social hierarchy that divides the population into magicians and non-magicians, with the former dominating and getting the better end of the stick in everything).

I think you'd really enjoy it... XD
